Optimising retirement for fulfilment

Retirement is often viewed as the golden age of relaxation. No more alarm clocks. No more traffic jams. No more emails demanding your immediate attention. But while the financial side of retirement is a big deal — because let’s face it, a steady supply of funds is needed to support the never ending bucket list of life experiences that await — there is more to the picture. Much more.

There is more to retirement than money.

If you’re looking to retire and truly thrive (not just exist), it’s essential to think about more than just your bank balance. “Wait what? … There is more to retirement than money”. You bet there is. Certainly access to a healthy superannuation balance will help you pursue the retirement dream you worked so hard for. However, all too often minimal attention is given to optimising one's social superannuation, as we near or enter into retirement.

Imagine you are nearing retirement. Have you reflected on what your daily life as a retiree will look like? If not, take some time to ask yourself these questions.

  • How do I want my day to be, every day?

  • What will my days look like now that I am not employed?

  • What will I do in the eight hours that I previously spent working?

  • Who will I spend my time with when I am not in the company of my co-workers on a daily basis?

  • What will my relationship with my partner be like?

  • What does my partner's ideal retirement look like? What if it is different from my ideal retirement?

  • How will I maintain my physical and cognitive health?

  • How will I cultivate a purposeful life that is driven by my core values?

Social superannuation in retirement is not about filling time — it’s about making the time you have matter. Considering the health of your mind and body (particularly as we age), the relationships you nurture, and even the hobbies you develop can determine whether retirement is the long-awaited dream or an existential confusion. (Spoiler alert: It's often the latter if you haven't planned beyond the dollars and cents).

At Fit for Life Coaching, we believe that retirement is the beginning of a new chapter. We want to help you to flourish and thrive in the years that follow, to ensure that your post-retirement life isn't just the absence of work — but the presence of a rich, full and meaningful life.
